في ريف هادئ وارف
الخضرة بشمال إيطاليا، تحت سفوح التلال الوادعة، عاشت بقرة حلوب عجوز تُدعى
بيانكا. ورغم أن بيانكا لم تكن الأقوى أو الأكثر إنتاجية في الحظيرة، إلا أن
الحيوانات الأخرى رأت فيها شيئًا فريدًا: الحكمة.
في كل مساء، مع
غروب الشمس خلف حقول القش، كانت بيانكا تقف عند السياج وتستمع إلى الريح.
قالت ذات مرة:
"الأرض متعبة".
نظر إليها العجل
الصغير لوكا.
"هل يمكن أن
تتعب الأرض؟"
أشارت بيانكا إلى
الحقول البعيدة، حيث كانت الجرارات تزحف ببطء تحت غبار كثيف كأنها حشرات معدنية.
أجابت:
"عندما يأخذ الناس من الأرض دون أن يعوّضوها، تتعب التربة، ويصبح الماء
ملوثًا، بل ويصبح الهواء ثقيلًا".
لم يفهم لوكا
الصورة كاملة. كل ما فهمه هو أن المزرعة كانت تتغير على مر السنين. أصبحت فصول
الصيف أشد حرارة. جفت الجداول مبكرًا. وأصبح الصيف أشدّ إرهاقًا من أي وقت مضى.
في أحد الأيام،
جاء أناس إلى مزرعة لوكا، يحملون دفاترهم، يدرسون المكان بدقة، بما في ذلك العلف،
والحظائر، ومصدر المياه، والأبقار، والبخار المتصاعد من أكوام السماد في ضباب
الفجر.
نظرت الحيوانات
حولها بقلق.
سألت دجاجة قلقة:
"هل جاؤوا لينتقدونا؟"
أجابت بيانكا:
"لا، لقد جاؤوا ليستمعوا."
كانوا يتناقشون مع
ماركو، وهو مزارع منهك، بشكل متكرر. قالوا إن المزارع الحديثة يجب أن تحمل معها
عبئين غير مرئيين.
ارتفع العبء الأول
إلى السماء.
كان يتكون من دخان
المصانع والسيارات، وانبعاثات الأسمدة، وأنفاس الماشية الدافئة التي تغطي الأرض
بغطاء سميك غير مرئي، وتحبس الحرارة في كوكبنا.
أما العبء الثاني
فكان أقرب بكثير.
وقد تجلى ذلك من
خلال آلام الأرجل، والحظائر المكتظة، وخزانات المياه المتسخة، ومعاملة الحيوانات
كآلات وليست ككائنات حية.
"لسنواتٍ
طويلة،" أوضح أحدهم لماركو، "كان الناس ينظرون إلى هذه المشاكل كقضايا
منفصلة. لكن ربما ثمة رابط بينها."
"ماذا يعني
هذا؟" سأل ماركو.
ضحك العالم وأشار
إلى بيانكا وهي تسترخي براحة على فراش نظيف من التبن تحت سقف الحظيرة المُهوى.
"الحيوانات
السليمة تُهدر طاقة أقل،" أوضح. "الأبقار الهادئة تأكل بشكل أفضل.
الأبقار المرتاحات تعيش لفترة أطول. المزارع المُدارة جيدًا تُلحق ضررًا أقل
بالأرض."
أنصت ماركو
باهتمام.
ابتداءً من ذلك
اليوم، بدأت الأمور تتغير تدريجيًا.
أصبحت خزانات
المياه تُنظف بانتظام. الحيوانات المريضة تتلقى الرعاية الطبية في الوقت المناسب.
خلال أشهر الصيف، كانت الحظائر تُهوى. أصبح تركيب العلف أكثر دقة. كان العمال
يتحركون بين القطيع بهدوء أكبر.
في البداية، لم
تكن التغييرات تبدو ملحوظة على الإطلاق.
لكن المزرعة تحولت
تدريجيًا.
أصبحت الأبقار
أنظف وأكثر صحة. تحسن إنتاج الحليب. قلّت الحيوانات المريضة. لم يكن هناك هدر
للطعام. خفت رائحة السماد المتعفن. حتى التربة المحيطة بالمزارع بدت أكثر ليونةً
بعد المطر.
وفي كل مساء، كانت
بيانكا تعود إلى السياج لتستمع إلى صوت الريح.
وفي إحدى هذه
الأمسيات، وقف لوكا بجانبها مرة أخرى.
قال: "صوت
الأرض مختلف".
أومأت بيانكا
برأسها متأملة.
وأجابت:
"نعم، ذلك لأن المزرعة أدركت حقيقة قديمة".
"ما
هي؟"
"أن رعاية
الحياة هي نفسها رعاية الأرض".
هبت الريح برفق
بين الأعشاب.
ولأول مرة منذ
سنوات عديدة، كانت رائحتها رائحة انسجام.

The Cow That Talked to the Wind
In a quiet and
lush green countryside of northern Italy, under the slopes of soft hills, there
lived an old dairy cow by the name of Bianca. While Bianca may not have been
the strongest or the most productive cow in the barn, the other animals thought
that she had something unique: wisdom.
Each evening, as
the sun began to disappear behind the hay fields, Bianca stood by the fence and
listened to the wind.
“Earth
is tired,” she said once.
The young calf
Luca looked at her.
“Earth can be
tired?”
Bianca pointed to
the faraway fields, where tractors crawled about under puffs of dust like metal
bugs.
“When
people take away from Earth without giving back to it,” she answered, “then the
soil grows tired, water becomes ill, and even the air gets heavy.”
Luca did not get
the full picture. He only understood that the farm had been changing throughout
the years. There were hotter summers. Streams dried up sooner. Summertime had
become more exhausting than ever.
One day, people
came to Luca's farm, notebooks in hand, studying the place thoroughly,
including the feed, barns, water supply, the cows, the steam rising off the
piles of manure in the early dawn mist.
The animals
looked around worriedly.
"Have
they come to criticize us?" asked a worried hen.
"No,"
said Bianca. "They have come to hear."
They discussed
things with Marco, an exhausted farmer, frequently. They said that modern farms
should be carrying two invisible loads with them.
The first load
went into the sky.
It was made of
smoke from factories and cars, fertilizer emissions, and warm breath of cattle
covering the Earth with a thick invisible blanket and trapping the heat in our
planet.
The other one was
much closer.
It showed itself
through sore legs, overcrowded pens, dirty water tanks, and animals being
treated as machines and not living beings.
“Years,”
another one explained to Marco, “have people seen these problems as distinct
issues. But maybe there is a connection between them.”
“So
what does that mean?” Marco asked.
The scientist
chuckled and gestured at Bianca relaxing comfortably on a clean bed of hay
under the ventilation of the barn’s roof.
“Healthy
animals waste less energy,” he explained. “Calm cows eat better. Comfortable
cows live longer. Well-run farms do less harm to the Earth.”
Marco listened
attentively.
Starting from
that day, little by little things started to change.
Water tanks were
cleaned regularly. Ill animals received timely medical care. During summer
months, barns were aired out. Feed composition became more accurate. Workers
moved around the herd more calmly.
Initially, the
changes did not look significant at all.
However, the farm
gradually transformed.
The cows were
more clean and healthy. Milk production improved. Fewer animals fell ill. There
was no waste of food. The smell of stale manure was weaker. Even the soil
around the farms felt softer when it rained.
And every
evening, Bianca came back to the fence to hear the sound of the wind.
During one of
these evenings, Luca stood by her side once more.
"The
sound of the earth is different," he remarked.
Bianca nodded
thoughtfully.
"Yes,"
she agreed. "That is because the farm has learned an old truth."
"What
is that?"
"That
tending to life is the same as tending to the land."
The wind blew
softly through the grass.
And for the first
time in many years, its scent was that of harmony.
